- (fl. 1370–1322 BC)King of the Hittites. Son of King Tudhaliya III. He seized the throne after a succession dispute and embarked on an aggressive military campaign of expansion defeating Tushratta, king of Mitanni, and severely weakening his kingdom. He expanded into Syria occupying Egyptian territory, including Kadesh, and detaching the kings of Amurru and Ugarit from alliance with Egypt. He is a correspondent in the Amarna letters. An attempt to marry his son, Zannanza, to the queen of Egypt failed and led to increased warfare. He died of the plague c. 1322 BC.Historical Dictionary Of Ancient Egypt by Morris L. Bierbrier
